Colombo, July 08 (Daily Mirror) - Rear Admiral Ravindra Tissera has been appointed as the new Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Navy by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Damian Fernando, formally handed over the letter of appointment to Rear Admiral Tissera at the Navy Headquarters on Monday (7) and extended his best wishes.
A distinguished alumnus of St. Peter's College, Colombo, Rear Admiral Tissera joined the Executive Branch of the Sri Lanka Navy as an Officer Cadet of the 10th Intake of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy (KDA) in 1992. He was commissioned as an Acting Sub Lieutenant in 1994 after completing his basic training and later qualified in the Sub-Lieutenant Technical Course at the Naval and Maritime Academy in 1999. In 2002, he specialized in Navigation with the Indian Navy.
Throughout his professional career, Rear Admiral Tissera has pursued extensive military and academic education. He completed the Naval Command and Staff Course in China, the National Defence and Strategic Studies Course at the National Defence College in Sri Lanka, and earned a Master's Degree in Maritime Policy from the University of Wollongong, Australia. He was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral in January 2024.
During his distinguished naval service, Rear Admiral Tissera has held several key command and administrative appointments. These include commanding Fast Attack Craft, various naval ships and establishments, serving as Commanding Officer of the Special Boat Squadron (SBS), Director Naval Personnel, Director General Personnel, Commander Eastern Naval Area, and most recently, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Navy.
An accomplished sportsman, he has also represented the Navy in rugby, basketball, and athletics.
Rear Admiral Tissera is widely recognized for his bravery during humanitarian operations, having been awarded the **Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP)** on nine occasions for acts of exceptional gallantry in combat. He is also a recipient of the **Uttama Seva Padakkama (USP)** in recognition of his exemplary service, unblemished conduct, and unwavering commitment to duty.
