Colombo, Feb. 26 (Daily Mirror) - Alleging that the restructuring of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has gone into a crisis, Opposition MP Ravi Karunanayake urged the government to resolve it as soon as possible before it could create a negative impact on the people.
“CEB restructuring has gone into a crisis as the exit of those employees who have opted to go on a voluntary retirement has not been able to leave the institution as intended. This is an issue which the government should look into as the crisis would have a negative impact on the people,” MP Karunanayake said in a statement.
“The people, CEB employees and CEB itself will suffer as a result of this crisis,” he said.
“An attempt to restructure CEB was made in 2001 for the first time. However, it has was changed due to the political situation which prevailed at that time. Another attempt was made in 2017, but was once again unsuccessful. There are 27,000 permanent employees and 3,000 temporary employees attached to CEB. The Sri Lankan population as a whole, CEB employees and CEB itself will suffer because of the crisis. Therefore, the government should resolve the issue as soon as possible,” he added.
CEB is to be divided into four state-owned companies in accordance with the Electricity Amendment Bill, which was approved by Parliament in August last year.
