PARLIAMENT (Daily Mirror)- SJB MP Rauff Hakeem said today the moves by the government to send 10,000 people to work in Israel at this critical time were unacceptable and it could impact negatively on security and economic implications.

He told Parliament that even Arab diplomats were bemused about the moves.

The MP said this while while referring to the lead story of today's Daily Mirror newspaper.

"The Foreign Employment Minister had sought Cabinet approval to send 10,000 employees to Israel. I am saddened about this. We have to be sensitive at a time like this. This is a very insensitive thing too. It will impact on our security and economic implications," he said.

He said that on a previous occasion when such recruitments were made during the tenure of Dilan Perera as the subject minister, they were given military training at the Diyathalawa camp before being sent to Israel.

“They have to work in farms which have been vacated by the poor Gaza residents. These people are going to be forcibly sent there. Their security is not assured. I was at a diplomatic function yesterday where many Arab diplomats participated. They were also bemused and ridiculing this move. You can earn foreign exchange, but the timing is bad,” the MP said.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who responded said Sri Lanka had been sending workers to Middle Eastern countries over the years and this is also part of that agreement.

"I don’t think there will be 10,000 to go to Israel. I don't think people will go to a war-torn area. This is just a continuation of the old practice. However, I will inquire about it from the Foreign Employment Minister," he said.

The President said Sri Lanka's stance has not changed and it had condemned the attack on the Gaza Strip.

    Why are you worried.

If Sri Lankan do not take this opportunity then Indians will take it. Working conditions there are much better than working in Hakeem's preferred countries where we heard stories of maids forced to swallow nails. But if you are in Israel working, they treat you much better than those of Hakeem's friends. The war is limited to a small area and it is going to end soon and do far there has been no support to extend it by Hakeem's friends who do not want to go to war with Israel.

Ranil does not care about the people, he only cares about holding his position as the President.

Let them avail this opportunity, there are risks but worth taking. They will gain vital knowledge in the field of agriculture for which Israel is one of the best. Are you really saying this out of concern for our people?

If the job seekers are not worried why is Hakeem making a huge and cry? I'm sure the conditions are much better than some of the middle eastern countries.

They can go, but if the situation get worse, they should not cry for the government to bring them back, let them take the risk on their own without burdening tax payers.

We also send Ranil home soon, as it is a part of the agreement the people of SL agreed upon. No American Conspiracy theory saves Ranil anymore.

Most Foreign affairs Ministries in the Affluent Countries of the world warn their citizens on traveling to countries that face conflicts and war .to travel at their own risk they say if there is a dire need to do so. ..In poorer countries it is a total different attitude is it not? ..We are the world they sang ..but it seem so layered and divided , the privileged with choices and those others making hard choices ..
