Ranjan to decide whether to apologize for contempt of court

Former MP Ranjan Ramanayake is currently discussing with his lawyers to decide whether to submit an apology for contempt of court, one of his legal consultants said today.

One of the consultants said Mr. Ramanayake will make the final decision in two days time.

Minister of Justice Wijedasa Rajapaksa said on Wednesday that Mr. Ramanayake would be set free if he submits a written apology to the judiciary for contempt of court.

Reports said Mr. Ramanayake would be pardoned and released next week if he submits an apology during the weekend. (Yohan Perera)

The request that he expresses regret is a responsible balance in the situation, so as not to compromise the judiciary in the future. A better definition of 'contempt of court' needs to be codified to avoid similar situation is the future. Ranjan has more than done his time for the 'offense' and should be freed. Ranjan is a responsible person and the pre-condition should not be onerous on him.

Ranjan’s allegations were never challenged and he disclosed those in the interests of the country. But noting that still there are sections of the judiciary who are honourable who too may have felt insulted, Ranjan should extend that apology and come out to restart his campaign to expose the cases of mismanagement, bribery and frauds that are still rife, as fast as possible.

The Americans like the Irish fought a brutal war against the British to get their freedom so understand better about political freedoms. To many repressive and suppressive people use the courts in Sri Lanka to oppress free speakers like Ranjan.

Is there a process to take the judiciary for letting the country l’s judicial process get politicized ??? According to media Sarath N Silva has gone on record apologizing for releasing Mahindha (accused on helping Hambantota case )! Any possibility for judiciary to apologize to people ?

It is not Ranjan alone, but all Sri Lankans know that the Justice System is corrupt and highly politicized. Most of the magistrates are political appointees.

When released, Ranjan should learn to associate only with the right people. For example, opportunists like Sudatta and another shifty businessman (offering a house for Ranjan) had rushed to see Ranjan when the news broke that he was going to be released. When I saw Sudatta's filthy Youtube program based on their meeting with Ranjan, I suspected that Ranjan might not be released so soon.

Mohan. Helping Hambanthota cannot be investigated any more. The statute of limitations expired a few months after Yahapalanaya came to power. Maithri and Ranil were aware of the deadline but decided to let it go. So much for one country one law!
