Radiology technologists to launch islandwide strike from tomorrow

Colombo, Jan, 27 (Daily Mirror) - The Government Radiology Technologists Association (GRTA) has decided to launch a continuous islandwide strike from 8.00 a.m. tomorrow (28), its Chairman Chanaka Dharmawickrama said.

Speaking to the media, Dharmawickrama said that during the strike action, all radiology-related services will be suspended, including X-ray examinations, CT scans, MRI scans, mammogram scans and surgical procedures involving the use of radiation in operating theatres.

He said the decision to escalate trade union action was taken as authorities failed to provide a proper solution following a one-day strike carried out on January 21.

The GRTA said the strike is being launched in protest against unqualified personnel allegedly conducting radiology examinations on patients at the Maligawaththa Hospital, raising serious concerns over patient safety.

Dharmawickrama warned that the strike would continue until the relevant authorities take immediate steps to address the issue and ensure that only qualified radiology technologists are engaged in such procedures.
