Public warned against using unfamiliar water bodies during festive season

Colombo, Dec. 24 (Daily Mirror) - Health authorities have advised the public to be vigilant when using unfamiliar water bodies during the ongoing festive season, citing safety risks arising from recent adverse weather conditions.

Consultant Community Physician Dr. Samitha Sirithunga said many water sources across the country have undergone structural changes due to floods and landslides, making them potentially dangerous. He explained that contamination, erosion and changes in water depth have been reported in several areas.

Addressing a media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau yesterday(24), Dr. Sirithunga noted that water bodies previously considered safe may no longer be suitable for bathing or recreational use.

He urged the public to seek advice from local residents before entering unfamiliar water sources, warning that sudden increases in depth and unstable ground conditions could pose serious risks.

Dr.Sirithunga also highlighted that the school holiday period and festive season often see an increase in road traffic accidents and other injuries. He called on the public to exercise extra caution while travelling and engaging in outdoor activities during this period.
