Public in Padukka begin raising funds to hold LG Polls

A group of people in Padukka have initiated a scheme to raise funds to hold the Local Government Elections.

Accordingly, the group sent money orders of amounts ranging from Rs.100 to 500 to the Elections Commission from the Padukka post office yesterday.

They said the government had failed to protect the basic right of the people to elect their representatives and that they initiated the fundraising program to protect their rights themselves. (Buddhika Kumarasiri)

People should stop paying for electricity and send money to EC for the elections. If this is done on a mass scale Govt cannot do anything.

Those people should have calculated that it costs well more than 500 rupees per person to conduct the election for eligible voters. Actual costs would be close to 1000 rupees per person. If these people were sending in 10,000 each then they could be taken seriously, but sending paltry sums shows they are doing gimmick.

I am prepared to give 2000/- ruppees if money is being collected to hold election. Proper receipts should be given for the money and a responsible, impartial organisation should collect the election donation money. I am from the Kesbewa Electorate

There are many poor people in the nation. Whoever wins the LG election won't be able to do much for them. Options should be get funds to do an aragalya to overthrow the government/parliament or use the funds to provide privately to the poor. The money being sent in will be totally wasted, and the big show about sending won't affect those in charge.
