Prisons spokesperson resigns

Colombo, June 12 (Daily Mirror) - Prisons Commissioner Gamini B. Dissanayake has tendered his resignation letter to Acting Prisons Commissioner Nishan Dhanasinghe, stepping down from his role as media spokesperson for the Prisons Department.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Acting Commissioner Dhanasinghe confirmed the resignation but said that no decision has yet been made regarding the appointment of a new spokesperson.

Dissanayake’s resignation comes in the wake of the suspension of Prisons Commissioner General Thushara Upuldeniya. Following the suspension, Dhanasinghe, who also serves as an Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Justice, was appointed Acting Prisons Commissioner.

Meanwhile, the government has turned its attention to reorganising the Prisons Department. As part of this restructuring, several changes are expected in the prisons across the country.

Take them all off the town and city centres and don’t keep them inner cities : Don’t waste money for minor offences and we spend a lot of money to maintain these people in inner cities : First and foremost reforms must be done : to reduce crime rates and drug is main issue for us : stop all those crimes : This created a lot of trouble: 50% of crimes are drug related crimes such as killings and fighting: This is a burden on our system and it cost a lot of money to protect them: create a separate prison only for these people And send them in a different countryside prison for them 1) High offenders jails 2) medium offenders jails 3) minor offenders jails Create these separate jails and create open prisons for minor offenders: Stop unnecessary expenditures in maintaining these people but make use of manpower in jails and train them in many professions to be productive to this country: Man makes mistakes but don’t make them to repeat them : that is rehabilitation what we need not to

Yes reorganising the Prisons Department is a priority. One of the areas looked at should be how any VIP in good health suddenly develops extreme symptoms and the prison doctor gives ok to get top facilities.
