Presidential election: Candidate should be a parent to be eligible
UPFA MP Ananda Aluthgamage in parliament today proposed an amendment to the presidential elections law and accordingly said it should be amended to include a provision that a candidate should be a parent to be eligible to contest such a poll.
“ We all believe that only a Buddhist could become the head of state but it is more important to include a clause in the presidential election laws saying one has to become a parent to be eligible to contest for the presidency,” Mr. Aluthgamage said during the committee stage debate on the budget last evening.
He said only a parent with children could understand the needs of the people.
“Neither the Prime Minister, Minister of Finance or the Minister of Housing and Cultural Affairs will be able to contest if the amendment I suggested is introduced. “However you will be able to contest since you are parent” he told Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne who was at the chambers at that time answering questions raised by the opposition MPs.
“You should try to contest for the presidential elections as you are an eligible candidate since you are a politician with a socialist line of thinking. I will back you if you contest,” he told Dr. Senaratne.
The MP added that he hopes to see Dr. Senaratne coming out of the government soon.(Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)
