President criticises opposition over shifting stance on education reforms

Colombo, Jan. 27 (Daily Mirror) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake today accused the Opposition of changing its position on the government’s education reforms saying attempts to create confusion would not derail the administration’s reform agenda.

Speaking at an event in Gampola, the President said the government remains committed to moving forward despite what he described as efforts to build false narratives around the reform process.

“I saw one person who was strongly opposing these reforms now asking why they were stopped,” President Dissanayake said, in an apparent reference to Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.

Premadasa, who had earlier been critical of the proposed reforms, has recently said the Opposition is prepared to support the government’s efforts. However, he also accused the government of failing to introduce reforms for Grade 6, claiming that many children had been left disadvantaged as a result.

The Opposition Leader maintained that responsibility for halting the reforms lies with the current President and government, and not with the Opposition.
