Colombo, May 19 (Daily Mirror) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is attending the 16th National War Heroes Commemoration Ceremony which is being held at the Battaramulla War Memorial.

It was reported earlier that the President will not attend the Ceremony.

The eminent Australian Prime Minister John Howard once said leaders do not have to be popular but they have to be strong and respected. Good message for AKD who is still an apprentice in this role. He should remember once a stand has been taken not to change it depending on which direction the wind blows!

It was acceptable for him to attend and not to gloat about the 'war'. It was a day of remembrance for the lives of the people who laid down their lives to protect Democracy. Period. That includes LTTE and JVP as well. Taking up arms against a democratically elected government is wrong, no matter what. To add a footnote, impartial investigations are required against the excesses or accused excesses of GOLSL forces and politicians who were responsible.
