Colombo, Feb. 23 (Daily Mirror) - The Postal Department will be able to achieve its revenue target of Rs. 15,000 million this year, Minister of Health and Mass Media Nalinda Jayatissa said.
He made these remarks while participating in the opening of the Madawala Ulpatha Post Office, which was renovated at a cost of Rs. 5.1 million yesterday (22).
The Minister said that around Rs. 2,000 million had been allocated last year for the development of the Postal Department, which generated an income of Rs. 13,450 million.
Accordingly, he noted that the revenue target of Rs. 15,000 million is expected to be achieved this year.
He said the postal service is taking steps to modernise and strengthen its operations. An allocation of Rs. 27 million has been made to purchase 209 security cameras for the Central Mail Exchange, Rs. 74 million for 225 computers, and Rs. 101 million for 1,500 tablet computers.
The Minister further stated that solar power generation systems have been installed at a cost of Rs. 24 million at the Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa post offices, as well as at the Central Mail Exchange and the Postal Headquarters.
The Polonnaruwa Postal Complex has already been completed.
In addition, the Postal Department has taken steps to procure 657 fingerprint machines at a cost of Rs. 31 million for installation in post offices islandwide, he said.
