Colombo, Dec. 30 (Daily Mirror) - A special traffic and security plan to be enforced in Colombo on December 31, ahead of New Year 2026 celebrations, with large crowds expected, particularly around the Galle Face Green area, police said.
Police warned that heavy traffic congestion is expected in central Colombo, including Fort, Pettah, Slave Island, Maradana, Kollupitiya, Bambalapitiya, and Cinnamon Gardens. They added that normal traffic flow will be maintained as long as possible, with alternative routes activated if congestion worsens.
Under the contingency plan, vehicles leaving Colombo via Galle Middle Road may be redirected through the NSA Roundabout, Galle Face Road, and Baladaksha Mawatha toward Colpetty. Travel restrictions may be imposed on Macan Marker Road and Baladaksha Mawatha if required. Vehicles entering from by-roads will be guided through designated right turns toward the NSA or Aliya Nana roundabouts.
Parking on pavements or along main roads will be strictly prohibited, and legal action will be taken against offenders.
Around 1,200 police officers will be deployed to manage traffic and ensure public safety. Designated parking facilities have been arranged to accommodate approximately 5,900 vehicles, with several free and paid parking locations available across Colombo.
Police have urged the public to follow traffic instructions and use designated parking areas to ensure smooth traffic flow and a safe New Year celebration.
