Pilot project to run electric buses to reduce cost

To reduce the cost of importing fossil fuels from abroad, the Highways Ministry has decided to introduce buses that can be powered by renewable energy sources.

Addressing the media Bandula Gunawardana, Minister of Transport and Highways, said that the resolution to implement the public-private partnership project was presented to cabinet ministers.

He said the operation of electric buses by the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB), centered on the commercial city of Colombo and the Gampaha district.

The implementation of a pilot project based on a formal feasibility study was approved by the cabinet ministers. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Private - Public partnership or solely private. Otherwise like the CGR jumping tracks everyday, the SLTB unions will 'demand' that additional new recruits should be taken to operate the electric busses since they lack skills. When that happens the costs will be much more than running diesels!

They will be happy to import buses immediately, because it is with public money and commissions. In the end, no feasibility study, business plan or technical evaluation and it finally ends up like Mattala Airport or Mihin Lanka or Lotus Tower.

Do not let the buses get charged during the night time, as that is when electricity costs the most the generate. Then again during the day time, when renewable like solar is working best, bus should be on the road.

All we lacks is a proper planning from a top down approach. Sri Lankan leadership currently lacks this visionary strategic plan and each ministers are here and there picking some good ideas without any proper planning
