Petrol price hike benefits private bus service, no reduction in fare: Gemunu

The increase in petrol prices will motivate people to avoid using alternative vehicles, the Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association (LPBOA) said.

Addressing the media, association president Gemunu Wijerathne said this motivation will help private buses provide transport for them.

Lanka Petrol 92 Octane was increased by Rs. 20 from yesterday.

The increase in petrol prices will push more people to use public transport. Therefore it will indirectly be beneficial to the private bus industry, Gemunu Wijerathne added

The selling price of a litre of Lanka Auto Diesel was reduced by Rs. 2 from midnight yesterday, but that would not help reduce the bus fare. The Auto Diesel price must be reduced between Rs. 15 to Rs. 25 if to reduce bus fares.

However, there is no possibility of providing this relief to passengers.

Wijerathne said there is no possibility of calculating the bus fare according to the National Policy on Bus Fares. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
