(Daily Mirror) - Claiming that the Presidential election should be held before October 17 next year, NPP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said people will take to the streets again if the election was not held according to the Constitution.
He told a meeting with Sri Lankan expatriates in New York, USA that the government has postponed the Local Government and Provincial Council elections and that the Constitution clearly states that the people's executive power should be exercised by the President appointed by the people.
"It is possible to bring the administration of the Local Government body under a Commissioner and Provincial Councils under the Governors' administration. However, the people's executive power should be exercised by the President appointed by the people. So, the Presidential election must be held before October 17 next year. If the President is trying to evade the election, he will have to go even before October 17. Some ask us why people don't take to the streets when they undergo so much of hardships. People are only waiting till the Presidential election is held. People will take to the streets if they get a signal that the election is not held," he said.
Dissanayake said the NPP comprises all the forces to transform the country after they obtain power.
