The Parliamentary Business Committee has scheduled the Parliamentary Pensions (Repeal) Bill for debate in Parliament on February 17, Leader of the House Bimal Rathnayake said.
He noted that the Bill is expected to be taken up and passed on the same day.
Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne informed Parliament that the Supreme Court has ruled the Bill to be consistent with the Constitution and determined that it can be passed with a simple majority in terms of Article 121(1).
The ruling followed petitions filed by several former Members of Parliament, who claimed that the proposed legislation violated fundamental rights and therefore required approval by a special majority in Parliament as well as a referendum.
The Bill, which was presented to Parliament on January 7 by Justice Minister Dr. Harshana Nanayakkara, seeks to abolish the pension scheme currently provided to former Members of Parliament.
