Over 700 organised criminals arrested within 17 months: Minister

Colombo, March 3 (Daily Mirror) - Some 723 organised criminals, including gunmen have been arrested between January 1, 2025 and 31 May 2025, Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala said today.

He told Parliament that 315 organised criminals have been arrested in 2024, including 22 gunmen, 14 riders, 50 individuals over incidents of attacking with sharp objects, 142 over aiding and abetting crimes.

He said 57 have been arrested over drug smuggling and 22 arrested for possessing weapons.

The Minister said 408 organided criminals have been arrested between January 1, 2025 and May 31, 2025.

He said 34 gunmen, 30 riders and 30 individuals over incidents of attacking with sharp objects and 174 over aiding and abetting crimes have been arrested.

The Minister said 80 have been arrested over drug smuggling and 83 arrested for possessing weapons.

But we cannot arrest foreign criminals running illegal businesses right under our very noses ! Instead we give them Police Protection !
