Colombo, Nov. 29 (Daily Mirror)- Amidst a major flood risk in the Colombo District due to rise in water level of the Kelani Ganga, a total of 6,016 people of 1,217 families have been sheltered in safe centres by 9.00 am this morning, the Colombo District Secretary said.
According to the disaster situation report, 99,668 people of 25,159 families have been affected in the Colombo district due to the disaster situation.
The Department of Irrigation warned that the risk of severe flooding in the Kelani Ganga is steadily increasing as water levels continue to rise.
The Department said the river has already reached a major flood level, with the Nagalagam Street gauge recording 6.4 feet. They said that once the level surpasses 7 feet, it is considered a critical flood stage.
