Norochcholai Unit 3 breaks down: Minister assures no power cuts

Unit 3 of the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant has experienced a breakdown, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said.

He said the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has informed him about the breakdown. However, he said there will be no power cuts due to it.

"Unit 3 was due to undergo major overhaul maintenance in April. To ensure an uninterrupted power supply, CEB owned Diesel and Fuel Oil Power plants will be used," the minister said.

The Norochcholai Power Plant has experienced breakdowns several times on previous occasions as well.

The first generator at the power plant was shut down on December 23, last year to manage the coal stocks and for maintenance purposes.

However, it has been added to the National Grid in January this year. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

Where is the solar crowd, and where is the wind power crowd. The solar crowd are hiding in the dark of night, the wind power lot will talk all hot air about how good their systems are. Coal and fuel plants are only way of the future. Nuclear is what all big countries go for because it is more reliable the coal even.

We need to increase the coal power plant capacity to 5000-6000 mw so we don't need nuclear power plants. No point of us going green to support Ranil's western liberal agenda until India stops burring coal in the coast. Renewables should only be a backup power source.

Norochchalay power plant is a result of a corrupt deal by the then Minister of Power and Energy in preference to more superior power plant offered by an European country at a lower cost. The minister who bagged the commission from this corrupt deal with China became rich overnight. The irony is that this fellow is still in parliament .
