The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment & Tourism has confirmed that no Sri Lankan nationals were injured in the shooting incident that occurred during a Jewish festival celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday.
The Ministry said it is continuing to monitor developments and is liaising with relevant authorities to gather further information regarding the incident.
Australian police said at least 16 people were killed and more than 40 others injured when two gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration attended by around 1,000 people at a small park near Bondi Beach, one of Sydney’s most popular locations. Among the injured were two police officers.
Police confirmed that one alleged gunman was shot dead at the scene, while the second suspect is in critical condition in hospital. Media reports identified the suspects as a father and son.
The Ministry said Sri Lankan authorities remain in contact with Australian officials as investigations continue.
