Nine Iranians sentenced to life imprisonment

The Colombo High Court today imposed life imprisonment on nine Iranians after trial on charges of trafficking heroin.

Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja imposed life imprisonment to the nine Iranians after the nine Iranians were found guilty of trafficking heroin within the territory of Sri Lankan on high seas at Akurala.

The nine convicts were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on the off Akurala on February 24, 2019. Subsequent to their arrest with the contraband they were handed over to the Police for further investigations.

The Sri Lanka Navy recovered around 100 kgs of heroin in the multi-day fishing trawler with the Iranian crew.

The recovered heroin was sent to the Government Analyst for examination and a report.

The Government Analyst's report had confirmed that it was heroin in the packages of around 84 grams

Judge Ranaraja sentenced the accused to life imprisonment after being found guilty. (T. Farook Thajudeen)

Many countries kill heroin smugglers. Why do we waste tax payers money and service if it's proved that they're committed crime?. Clearly they're gonna get released soon. The corruption of Paradise....No wonder IMF always hates us.

Why not inquire from Saudi Arabia or Malaysia about the appropriate punishment to these drug dealers? Both countries have same legislation. Apply it in our courts too. This will ease congestion in our jail.
