Colombo, Nov. 7 (Daily Mirror) - Former Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela was re-elected as the Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, securing a majority of 145 votes at the election held this afternoon.

Dela received 195 votes, defeating Basnayake Nilame of Kataragama Devala, Diminda Bandara Udurawana, who obtained 50 votes and came in second. The third candidate, Basnayake Nilame of Natha Devala, A.W.A. Bandaranayaka, received only 13 votes.

A total of three candidates were eligible to contest the election. Although eight individuals initially expressed interest in running, only the nominations of Nilanga Dela, Diminda Bandara Udurawana, and A.W.A. Bandaranayaka were accepted, as the remaining nominations had not been duly seconded.

It is time for the government to ASAP bring in fresh Rules if necessary to limit the term of the DN to one term if the period of office is 10 years as at today or limit the term to 5 years and allow two terms. This is a joke as a sitting DN has all the resources to get through/win an election
