New tax on imported coconut oil from next week

The government has decided to impose a new tax on imported coconut oil from next week, Finance State Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said.

While addressing a meeting in Ruwanwella this evening, he said the decision was taken to protect the local coconut oil manufacturers.

Accordigly, a discussion was held to impose Rs. 25 for a litre of imported coconut oil. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

This government is very innovative in implementing taxes. The majority of coconut oil is imported in this country. Local mills have all closed down because of good governance.

Why import coconut oil. Coconut is one of our export, next to tea and rubber, it is waste of our foreign reserves. All imports of coconut based goods should be banned. This is the time to preserve our foreign currency.

This is a result of what our idiotic politicians did to the BCC some years back to nationalize this company and brought its downfall by politicization. And some idiots cannibalised the machinery and installed them in Horana from what I have heard sometime back and thereafter nothing heard about it.. Now sadly we have to import this product whereas earlier we exported the coconut products earning foreign exchange. What a pity!
