Colombo, March 19 (Daily Mirror) - A new method has been introduced from today (March 19) to help vehicle owners retrieve previously registered fuel QR codes when the mobile phone number used for the original registration is no longer in use or belongs to someone else.
The new feature applies to vehicles registered for the fuel QR system before March 14, 2026, and aims to resolve difficulties faced by the public when trying to access their QR codes due to inactive or changed phone numbers.
Under the new system, vehicle owners can obtain their fuel QR code by correctly entering the vehicle number and chassis number to verify ownership.
Authorities said that even if a vehicle has already been registered under another phone number, users can now cancel the previous registration and register again using a new mobile number, provided the correct vehicle details are entered.
When selecting the “Override” option, the old account linked to the vehicle will be removed from the database and a new account with the updated phone number will be activated immediately.
Officials noted that once this process is completed, the previous registration will be cancelled and the earlier user will lose all access and privileges related to that vehicle’s fuel QR code.
The new facility is expected to help rightful vehicle owners obtain their QR codes without difficulty in cases where the registered phone number is no longer owned, inactive, or used by another person.
Authorities also warned that removing or overriding the registration of a vehicle without legal ownership is a punishable offence, and strict action will be taken against those who misuse the system.
