Colombo, Dec.30 (Daily Mirror) - A shipment of another stock of six million eggs will arrive from India tomorrow, the Sri Lanka State Trading (General) Corporation (STC) said.

STC Chairman Asiri Walisundara said this new stock of eggs will be released to Sathosa outlets countrywide for retail sales.

Meanwhile, All Island Egg Producers Association president Sarath Rathnayaka said they would be able to sell eggs at a price of between Rs. 30 and Rs. 35 each in the local market during the next few months, and the new VAT will not affect the prices.

The price of eggs in the local market went up to around Rs. 65 each. It was less than Rs. 50 at the economic centres during the past week, and it will be less than Rs. 45 now.

"If the VAT affects eggs prices, then it will increase; if not, it will come down to between Rs. 30 and Rs. 35 each during the new year festive season," Walisundara added.

All the protection for farmers and producers of all agricultural types has gone on too long. Western countries have taxes but they do not block imports of foods from overseas. There is free market, which then benefits their public. A lot of bad agricultural practies here would disappear if unrestricted imports were allowed.

Please continue to get down eggs! You think these guys will reduce even if they are made tax free? (Most don’t pay proper taxes or nothing at all) we have a foolish set of people who believe anything. Some retired guy said that he doesn’t want to keep money in his bank account because it will be taxed 18% from January! What a cow? To see some aspiring politicians have told him so- and that once they come into power- all taxes will be abolished!

What is happening with distribution by CWE, I went to Delkanda CWE outlet thrice, they had tiniest eggs, I suspect, some employees, in connivance with private egg vendors/hoteliers selling the eggs, keeping a margin of gratification for some managerial staff of the CWE outlet concerned. Every turn corruption, this is the way of life in Sti Lanka.
