Colombo, March 2 (Daily Mirror) - SLPP MP, Namal Rajapaksa expressed shock over the reported assassination of former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in air strikes describing him as a close friend of Sri Lanka.

Taking to X, the MP said he was “shocked to hear” of Ahmadinejad’s assassination and recalled the former Iranian leader’s role in strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.

Rajapaksa noted that Ahmadinejad had been instrumental in launching several key development projects in Sri Lanka during his visit to the island in 2008 at the invitation of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, including the upgrading of the Sapugaskande Oil Refinery and the implementation of the Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project.

Stating that Iran has always been a true friend of Sri Lanka, Rajapaksa conveyed his deepest condolences to the families of those reportedly killed in the air strikes.

“We stand with the people of Iran at this hour of need and call on all parties to exercise restraint and pursue discussions rather than choosing a path of war,” he added.

Whilst Sri Lanka value Iran's contribution to the development projects in Sri Lanka aren't we giving some thought to the suffering of the people of Iran under a dictatorship by the Clergy who is the final authority. Under this regime the females have been suffering in their personal lives not able to reach their destiny in the field of education, the clothes they wear with no freedom. and their choice of government etc. My question is will Sri Lankans want a regime where a dictatorship rules their personal freedoms. As the saying goes charity begins at home and not hypocrisy shown in other countries. Diffferent people may express different reasons but basically the people of Iran should be happy not one segment of society nearing the end of their lives!!!!!!!!!

Colombo, March 2 (Daily Mirror) - The government will issue a message of condolence on all the deaths, including Iranian state leaders and officials who were killed in the ongoing war, Cabinet Spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa said today. He told a news conference that the Foreign Ministry will officially do this soon. The Minister said this while responding to a question as to why the government has failed to issue condolences on the killing of Iranian state leaders though Sri Lanka has maintained close relationship with Iranian leaders in the past.

Do you remember the recent protests in Iran where 6000 protesters were killed for agitating for women's rights, refusing to wear head calf/veil, desiring to dress similar to women of the western nations, work in all fields like men. These were human rights. Iranian regime is a repression regime. A change of regime in Iran is a must. People in Iran became westernised during King Sha's time, who was ousted by Islamic radicals. This is history. It is wise to stay neutral. We need the western countries for education, science and technology. etc.
