Toronto, March 24 (Daily Mirror)- The National People's Power (NPP) will not allow the government to implement the proposed Constitutional Amendments to introduce a new parliamentary electoral system before the Presidential polls, NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said.
Speaking at a meeting with the Sri Lankan community in Toronto, Canada, he said the government was making every effort to evade a national election at this juncture as they are purturbed with the predictions that they are going to lose power.
"They are afraid of transfering power to the people.That is why there has been hesitation on elections.The government has now presented a Cabinet Paper to introduce a new electoral system. We will assure you that we will not allow any opportunity for the government to do it before the Presidential election," he said.
Dissanayake said hnBasil Rajapaksa and his team were now harping to conduct the parliamentary elections before the Presidentail election as they are now certain that they cannot secure at least some parliamentray seats if the Presidential polls are held first.
He said however, according to the Constitution, the President has the discretion to dissolve Parliament at any moment and added that Parliament cannot be dissolved by passing a resolution in Parliament.
"The Presidential election has been held before the parliamentray election on three occassions in 2010, 2015 and 2019," he said.
Responding to a question, he said the NPP was ready to form a government with individuals whom the NPP can agree and allign with in the event of the NPP failing to secure 113 seats.
"If we are able to secure some 105 seats, it means that the people are ready to accept our government. So, in that case, we will join with individuals whom we can agree and allign with. We will not allign with political forces but individuals," he said.

Whatever has been said about JVP in the past today NPP is a strong political force in Sri Lanka. How did they do it ? How did increase the support? How did they organise all these programs locally and internationally… It looks like a mystery? It looks that they have some inside support in all sectors of our communities What a take over ? What a magics What is a political change ? Brave boys and girls in NPP? Brave people are behind them? Can they materialise all this into a win ?

You are an ardent supporter of the current electoral system that allows JVPers to get elected to the parliament of Sri Lanka. Under First Past the Post electoral system none of the JVPers will be elected to the parliament including AKD. Therefore, AKD and his party has opposed First Past the post system vehemently. In fact 95% of the current parliamentarians will be defeated at a general election. This is the "JR's political knot" that every politician fears. (JR ge Gatey)

Who cares about what these guys say. They have done more than anyone to destroy the country, it's economy and onstruct progress over many decades. They are a power hungry organization that would stop at nothing to seize power. They showed their extremist colours on the 70's, 80's and more recently in the 20's. We recall how they marched to overrun and destroy the Parliament not too long ago.

It's comical as SL known as Democratic Republic of SL, now correct me if am wrong, democracy means majority rules. However to become president in SL you don't need to win an presidential election all you have to do is get 113 or more members that you give assurance that you won't prosecute them for corruption in turn they oblige and obligated to give support to you to become president. Now folks don't bother to look for that in our constitution, it's not there, this is how it's done in the miracle of Asia.

If the present rulers try to do all gimmicks to manipulate the election results, the future govt. should take action against them once they are formed even upto removing their civic rights.They should respect people's outcry and hold elections first and allow new govt to do the necessary constitutional changes.Moreover this is only interim govt.they do not have power to pass a single bill in parliament

Majority of the people of the country are against such manipulative changes to the Constitution. The current trends show that an NPP government is a valid possibility in the elections. Although we never voted for NPP in the past, any of the other mainstream political parties do not seem to be willing and able to establish good governance and equality of law in the country. So this time, NPP would be a good option to consider.

I watched his Canada meeting videos, people there were clapping for his cheap jokes ridiculing former Presidents. He did not say how the economy will be revived but said that it is a simple task. Another Gota , I guess. I think this NPP is a bunch of opportunists trying to take advantage of economic situation like SLPP in 2019 which took advantage of Easter Sunday attacks.
