NPP lawyers condemn brutal killing of attorney and wife; demand swift justice

Colombo, Feb. 15 (Daily Mirror) - While condemning the assassination of Attorney-at-Law Buddhika Mallawaarachchi and his wife, lawyers of the National People’s Power (NPP) urged the government to accelerate its efforts to restore public safety and the rule of law.

They said in a statement that they expect that the National People's Power government, elected for the dignity and well-being of all citizens, will fulfil its responsibility.

"We vehemently condemn this attack launched against a community dedicated to voicing and defending the rights of citizens, both inside and outside the courtroom—an attack carried out by thugs nurtured within a para-state by previous rulers to fulfill narrow personal political agendas.

"This incident underscores that the current government, which is operating with the objective of ending the dark chapter where armed thugs held the power to kill unarmed citizens in broad daylight in public spaces, must act with even greater speed than it currently does."

The NPP lawyers emphasise that the State cannot evade its responsibility and that the wheels of justice, the subsequent investigations, and the mechanisms for crime prevention must operate faster than ever before.

"We expect that the National People's Power government, elected for the dignity and well-being of all citizens, will fulfil its responsibility. We further expect the Sri Lanka Police and the State machinery to conduct investigations with due diligence and speed to bring the perpetrators before the law,"  they added.
