Vavuniya, March 16 (Daily Mirror)- A future National People’s Power (NPP) government must include ministers representing the North, NPP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today.

Speaking at the Vavuniya District convention, he said they were already having discussions with the moderate Tamil leaders who are not extremist or racist.

"There must be ministers representing the north in a future NPP government. We are already having discussions with the moderate Tamil leaders who are not extremist or racist. They must be part of the NPP government," he said.

He said the NPP will resolve issues of the Tamils such as language issue, land issue and said that they would introduce constitutional amendments so as to ensure political rights of the Tamils.

"We will assure you that we will take steps to resolve the language issue. We will ensure the right to deal with the state in your language," he added.

First you need to get elected by the people.

NAGA LAND Saturday, 16 March 2024 08:48 PM

TAMILS DO EVERYTHING IN THE TAMIL LANGUAGE. WE HAVE NO PROPBLEM. UPCOUNTRY TAMILS HAVE SO MANY PROBLEM IN CENTRAL PROVINCE, IF YOU CAN ?????

Tissa Fernando Saturday, 16 March 2024 09:26 PM

What amendments are proposed , he is not saying what these are? What us the issue with language? Tamil is an official language in Sri Lanka along with Sinhala but in the North you will not find any sign board in Sinhala. Tamils can buy property in any part of Sri Lanka but non tamils cannot do so freely in the North.

Be Professional Sunday, 17 March 2024 02:35 PM

What they say you are anti JVP and racial.

    johan Saturday, 16 March 2024 11:26 PM

There again the old generation MPs must be chased away by the northern people, if north is to be developed

Volker Metzger Sunday, 17 March 2024 12:19 AM

AKD's clear statements and announcements regarding the participation of Tamil politicians in its future government and the solution of all relevant, still existing internal problems are without exception to be welcomed!!! The implementation of such a policy of reconciliation, compensation and participation would give the country a significant development boost towards a better future for all people, positively advance the economy and strengthen its reputation in the world!!! It would also represent a clear demarcation from the policies of the previous governments and document a real new beginning in Sri Lanka's political life!!!

    Observer Sunday, 17 March 2024 01:05 AM

It’s all talk. Until and unless there are two states in one country, no good to Sri Lanka.

Forward Thinking Sunday, 17 March 2024 01:35 AM

The way to go. At least they are learning from the developed countries.

    Jude Sunday, 17 March 2024 03:16 AM

NPP must reduce the number of MP's to 100!!! Back in 1947, 1952, and 1956 it was only 95 seats in the parliament then in 1960, 1965 and 1970 it was only 151 seats in the parliament. So NPP should make it a policy to change the MP's to 100 and the cabinet members to 18 yeah.

Tissa Fernando Sunday, 17 March 2024 09:41 PM

Yeah , yeah, how can they reward those now working in the campaign, how can you remove the MPs elected by people. How can they change the constitution without 2/3 majority. All these are empty promises including resolvibg economic issues and corruption.

    Lokka Sunday, 17 March 2024 06:09 AM

Tamil is already an official language on par with Sinhalese. What language issue then? The only problem is a logistics problem, not a legal issue. These are only empty promises to win the votes.

    DOT Sunday, 17 March 2024 06:41 AM

Great to see your policy changing skills! You decide what you want to be!

The NPP has so many overseas who hate them for their stance on dual citizenship, they can never get to power. NPP leader can tour countries with substantial amount of Sri Lankans, but in the end as soon as they know about his stance on dual citizenship they would rather support and give funds to any other party.

    Buddhist Sunday, 17 March 2024 07:16 AM

Anura, no point in saying we will resolve the Tamils' issues. Spell it out now, if not it will be the same old same old.

    warren Sunday, 17 March 2024 07:29 AM

These were the people who shouted "palath ", baba" apita epa" in 88-89, which translates into "we do NOT want the provincial council system". They are now talking of devolution. Our dear Tamil brothers and sisters, please do not get hoodwinked by such statements. The JVP is a party with no credibility. It vacillates for political gains.

    Don Sunday, 17 March 2024 08:00 AM

NPP mentioned a very simple need. Any of former government should have done this and no one did. All living in SL are same and should be treated equitably. All should be allowed to practise their culture religion and language. There is no need to divide country, give police power but give them so many things to make their lives peaceful and productive. I am sure NPP will do that.

Tissa Fernando Monday, 18 March 2024 07:34 AM

You are living in your own fantasy world. There is no equal treatment for all anywhere in the world. There are divisions and levels between individuals. Currently all in Sri Lanka are allowed to practise any religion or culture they prefer. Both sinhala and Tamil are official languages and English is widely spoken. Anyone can buy any property but practically a non Tamil cannot buy property in the North. Also non Tamil speaking people cannot even find a signboard in Sinhala in the North. That is how it works right now. So I am not sure what you are really complaining about?

Against racism Monday, 18 March 2024 08:36 AM

The Maligawa in Kandy is against all treated equally. One religion is given preference, so then in turn people with that religion on their birth certificate will be treated better. Even current government is desperately courting the racist monks in Kandy, and racism will as usual become major voting trend as SLPP and UNP desperately use it to get votes.

    D P P Prasad Sunday, 17 March 2024 08:00 AM

If there is a possibility to resolve mainly land issue and language issue The people who are living in the northern areas can keep some hopes about their coexistence. Even after the conflicted period they were encouraging many hardships. Further since 1948 just after independence they didn’t have a permanent solution for their hardships so far

Asoka Kuruppu Sunday, 17 March 2024 08:06 AM

Dr Rasjan Phillips ( Colombo) should be the Minister for Science

    Cheers Sunday, 17 March 2024 10:00 AM

Minority loves NPP as they are the only party who will destroy the country for money and diaspora tune along with Western powers who will show them $$$ so AKD and the NPP who will dance to their tune

    Traitors Sunday, 17 March 2024 02:44 PM

So you are racist fueling the ruination of country from overseas.

    Velu Sunday, 17 March 2024 10:11 AM

Will you offer heavyweight portfolios or like what JR offered to Thondaman to please estate workers?. There is a large number of Tamil floating votes. Tamil people don't trust present Tamil politicians anymore. Anyway, there is an opportunity for you.

Citizen silva Sunday, 17 March 2024 11:46 AM

The next thing you will hear is from the UNP, SKB

    Dee Sunday, 17 March 2024 12:20 PM

You can forcibly take their ID cards as well! They just got away from the LTTE, they would not want a similar set to govern them again!

    DD Sunday, 17 March 2024 01:05 PM

Well, well, well, let me dust off my crystal ball here. Ah, I see it now! AKD, while you can aim for the presidential seat, let's be real – when it comes to running the show, Sajit's got the knack for it. It's like the perfect recipe: AKD as president, Sajit as the PM. Good for the common man.

    Citizen k Sunday, 17 March 2024 01:34 PM

Mr Tissa ,Land can be purchased in the north if someone is willing to sell it to you.Hope you are not thinking about antiquated Thesavalami Law.

    Anil Sunday, 17 March 2024 02:23 PM

NPP would take even Prabhakaran, if he comes with Northern votes, only if there dreams come true.

    Truth Sunday, 17 March 2024 02:57 PM

He can tell any concession as knows jolly well he is not going to be the President.

    L Jaya Sunday, 17 March 2024 04:02 PM

These sweet talks will last only for few more months JVP believes they have already been selected bas they are showing big crowds.

    Raman Monday, 18 March 2024 12:29 AM

your movement has been anti-tamil at most times, we know from your past deeds. Now trying to win northern votes, will not work, sorry

Kumudu kodippili Monday, 18 March 2024 01:08 AM

I think one government offered Mr. Anandassgaree a ministerial position years ago. There were some opposition to that from some other Tamil parties. At the end he did not accept it. If I remember correctly.

    ManOman Monday, 18 March 2024 02:00 AM

    We already have uncle Douglas!!

    Eper Monday, 18 March 2024 07:03 AM

Hope you would hold provincial elections n give power sharing powers and development among the provinces. We all know that RW has depreciated the LKR by unrealistic levels and he is now, manipulating the LKR n showing that the country has progressed economically. We expect you will give a free hand to everyone to develop, irrespective of ethnicity

Against racism Monday, 18 March 2024 08:29 AM

NPP are the most Nationalistically racism party. They are constantly against any person of Sri Lankan decent who for living needs had to get overseas citizenship. Northern and Eastern Tamils would well do to keep up their mistrust of these nationalist rouges. Moderates would never be against dual citizens in Parliament. Of course the Tamils in upcountry face troubles from the Maligawa worshipers in Kandy, but the Maligawa will be brought down within a generation, and be only a cultural artifact within 50 years as most will desert it.

Percy Wijenayake Monday, 18 March 2024 08:48 AM

We need to make Tamil, Sinhala and English compulsory at Advanced Level Exams. Transfer Public Servants, and teachers to the North and East to get a command of the Tamil Language. I did suggest this to the GA, Mannar long time ago and he said it is an impossible task.

Total BS Monday, 18 March 2024 09:35 AM

"but in the North you will not find any sign board in @Tissa Fernando: Sinhala. Tamils can buy property in any part of Sri Lanka but non tamils cannot do so freely in the North." What nonsense are you talking? Have you been to the North? Have you try to buy property in the North?

    Asokan Monday, 18 March 2024 09:38 AM

who says that Tamil is a National language on par with Sinhala. Tamils outside of North-East are still compelled to sign documents' at police station written in Sinhala with no translation provided. So recognition of Tamil as a national language is only on paper

    Ajith Monday, 18 March 2024 09:40 AM

Most welcome. All parties should officially recognize/accept this along with SJB proposal for English medium education, if SL wants to compete in the world stage

    Man Monday, 18 March 2024 09:41 AM

With Chandrika, from 2004 to 2005, the JVP had 4 cabinet ministries and many state ministries along with deputy ministry posts. What have they done? AKD was the Agricultual minister. They have to do a comparison with their previous work and how they intend to improve, from there, must be published rather than talking with no action other than collecting money and files.

Mark Anandappa Monday, 18 March 2024 09:52 AM

Who is going to vote for you , NPP might be pulling crowds but that do not represent the votes.

    Patcitz Monday, 18 March 2024 08:58 PM

No way, Mr. Husband of PUNCHI, you cannot do it just gaining 8 or less seat in parliament.
