Colombo, Dec. 10 (Daily Mirror) - The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has outlined the scientific process behind issuing landslide early warnings, noting that alerts are generated using rainfall forecasts from the Meteorology Department along with real-time data from automated rain gauges placed in high-risk areas.
According to the NBRO, warnings are valid for 24 hours and are revised in line with changing rainfall conditions. They are issued regionally to safeguard people living in identified risk zones and near unstable slopes.
The organisation stressed that regional alerts indicate a potential risk within specific vulnerable locations and do not mean the entire area will be affected. It added that the methodology used follows internationally recognised standards applied in other countries.
While highlighting that scientific tools for disaster management have limitations, the NBRO urged the public to remain patient and supportive.
“This challenge affects all of us. Rather than blaming one another, we must understand the situation and encourage officials who are working with dedication,” the statement read.
