NARA investigates blue bottle jellyfish presence at Panadura beach

Colombo, July 28 (Daily Mirror) - The National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) has launched an investigation into the presence of Physalia, commonly known as the blue bottle jellyfish, along the Panadura beach and issued safety advice to the public following reports of several beachgoers being stung.

The investigation was initiated after the Panadura Municipal Council informed NARA about an increased presence of jellyfish in the coastal area. NARA officials visited the beach this evening to examine the situation, identify the species and assess potential risks to the public.

A NARA official said there is a high possibility that blue bottle jellyfish have washed ashore along the entire stretch of Panadura beach.

The move follows an incident yesterday in which several swimmers were affected by jellyfish stings while at Panadura beach. The victims were admitted to hospital, received treatment and were later discharged.

The blue bottle jellyfish is known for its painful sting, which in some cases can cause severe pain, allergic reactions and breathing difficulties.

NARA advised the public to exercise caution when entering the sea in areas where jellyfish have been reported and to follow safety instructions issued by relevant authorities.
