Colombo, May 15 (Daily Mirror) - Heavy rainfall in the upstream catchment areas of the Kuda Ganga sub-basin of the Kalu River has raised the risk of minor flooding in several low-lying areas, the Irrigation Department warned today.
According to the department, considerable rainfall had been recorded in the upstream areas as of 8.00 a.m. today. Based on the current rainfall conditions and river water levels at hydrological stations in the Kalu Ganga basin, there is a possibility of a minor flood situation in low-lying areas along the Kuda Ganga and Maguru Ganga valleys.
The warning applies to areas within the Bulathsinhala, Madurawala and Palinda Nuwara Divisional Secretariat divisions.
Authorities said there is a high possibility that roads running through the flood plains of the Kuda Ganga and Maguru Ganga could become inundated.
Residents living in low-lying areas and motorists travelling through the affected areas have been requested to remain vigilant and exercise caution.
The Disaster Management Authorities have also been advised to take adequate precautionary measures in response to the situation.
