Minimum Wages Bill passed, amendments approved to two Budget Relief Bills

Colombo, July 22 (Daily Mirror) - The Minimum Wages Bill, which increases private sector employee minimum wages to Rs 27,000 from Rs. 21,000 from April this year, with a further increase to Rs. 30,000 from next year, was unanimously approved by Parliament without a vote today.

Meanwhile, amendments to the Budget Relief Bill No. 4 of 2016 was approved by a two thirds majority with 181 members voting for it and no votes against.

Amendments to the Budget Relief Bill No 36 of 2005 were also approved by a 181-vote margin, with no MPs voting against it.

More than 40 members were absent during the time of voting.

Minimum basic monthly wage should be 45,000. Pacha Kumara is being advised by Ceylon Chamber of Conmen who have been fleecing the poor workers.

In the same breath, I wish to appeal to all those in power and in positions of responsibility to enact a law that formally recognises all household servants as employees. They should be duly registered as such, entitled to receive a minimum wage, and covered under EPF and other basic employment benefits.

This is a great relief offered by NPP Government to increase the wages of Private Sector from 21,000/= to 27,000/= from April 2025. Thank you so much our Excellency President AKD and the NPP.

Fulfillment of a another promise made by the government. Please effect the increase for plantation workers which is very necessary and over due.
