Colombo, March 19 (Daily Mirror) - A 23-year-old female student from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Colombo was miraculously rescued today, after falling down the precipice at World’s End in Horton Plains National Park. The student reportedly slipped and fell nearly 50 feet while attempting to take a selfie at the edge of the famous viewpoint.
The incident occurred during the morning hours when the student was visiting the national park with a group of fellow undergraduates. While positioned near the edge for a photograph, she lost her balance and tumbled down the steep slope. Her fall was broken by a tree branch, where she managed to cling on precariously over the massive abyss.
A safari driver present at the scene immediately jumped into action. Risking his own life, the driver climbed down to the ledge where the student was suspended, successfully moved her from the branch, and stabilized her on a nearby rock surface. Following the initial intervention, an emergency call was placed to the Pattipola Police, the Sri Lanka Army, and the Police Special Task Force (STF). A joint rescue operation was swiftly launched, involving Commandos attached to the 3rd Singha Regiment in Nuwara Eliya, STF officers, Wildlife Department officials, and a team led by the OIC of the Pattipola Police.
After an intense operation lasting several hours, the rescue teams brought the student back up to the safety of the viewing platform. She was immediately rushed to the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital for medical treatment.
