Madush’s Aunt files FR in SC

The aunt of ‘Makandure Madush’ today filed a fundamental rights petition in the Supreme Court seeking a restraining order against the Special Task Force (STF) and Criminal Investigations Department (CID) from arresting him while in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), claiming there is no extradition treaty between the two countries and therefore it is illegal.

The petitioner, A.V. Sriyani of Hathporuwa, Suriyawewa had named STF Commandant DIG T.F. Latiff and four others as respondents. In a petition, she had stated that at the age of ten, Madush’s mother was killed by the Army in 1989.

A few years later, Madush worked as a hospital attendant and later married to a nurse. He is the father of one. Due to the constant threat from local politicians, he had to flee from his home town. In several occasions, he was in remand custody over several counterfeit charges.

Due to this situation and a constant threat to his life, he had to leave the country for his safety, the petition stated. However, recently he was arrested by the UAE authorities. Since there is no extradition treaty between the two countries, she asked the SC to issue an order preventing him from being arrested by the Sri Lankan law enforcement authorities. (Thilini de Silva and Ranjan Katugampola)
