Colombo, March 9 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser and MP Namal Rajapaksa said a society that fails to respect mothers and women cannot build genuine love and respect for the motherland.
Addressing the SLPP Women’s Day celebration held yesterday (8) in Matale to mark International Women's Day, Rajapaksa said the country had been built on the sacrifices and blessings of mothers and women.
“We love our motherland just as much as we love our mother, wife and sister. This society has been built on the blessings of mothers and wives. Therefore, we respect our motherland in the same way we respect our mothers,” he said.
He said that women are often the first to face the challenges brought by economic, social and political crises in the country.
Rajapaksa also recalled the sacrifices made by women during the civil war, stating that many mothers endured immense suffering when their children were sent to the battlefield.
He said that when former President Mahinda Rajapaksa ended the war, it allowed thousands of young people to live without fear, adding that the mothers and daughters of the country had made significant sacrifices for that freedom.
Rajapaksa further claimed that during periods of economic hardship, it is often mothers and wives who face the greatest burden in managing household expenses, particularly amid the rising cost of living.
He said women play a vital role in society and therefore every political party and government must pay greater attention to their challenges and contributions.
