The bus services are limited on New Year's Day, but the trains continue to run as usual, according to the timetable, the National Transport Commission (NTC), the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB), and the Sri Lanka Railway Department said.
They said the buses were limited awaiting the arrival of the inauspicious times (Nonagathaya), which begins this morning at 8:35 am.
Nevertheless, the buses will run after the inauspicious time at 9.23 pm.
After the auspicious time of starting work, transactions, and partaking of meals, the buses would run from Colombo to other provinces based on passenger needs.
SLTB deputy general manager Panduka Swarnahansa said there is a possibility of operating 25 to 30 buses after the auspicious time is over.
NTC Director General Nilan Miranda said private buses have been assigned for long-distance services to operate from Colombo as much as possible.
Meanwhile, Railway Department Deputy General Manager (Commercial) V.S. Polwattage said trains are being operated according to the normal timetable. As such, long-distance trains are set to operate, though there is a limit in operating short-distance trains. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
