The decision by some leading local businessmen to take to politics is a positive move, a Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP said today.

“Leading businessmen when taking to politics will be compelled to pay taxes. They will spend their money for the betterment of the common people. Therefore, the decision by several leading local businessmen to take to politics is a positive move,” SJB MP Harshana Rajakaruna told journalists.

Meanwhile, the MP criticized the move by the government to amend the Constitution and scrap the Executive Presidency, saying the hidden agenda of this move is to avoid holding even the Presidential poll.

“The Government has already postponed the local government elections, Provincial Council elections and now it is trying to postpone the General and Presidential elections as well through amending the electoral systems and the Constitution itself,” he added. (Yohan Perera)

Need DEDICATED people to take to politics people who will place country before self and lead business in the proper way(to help the community not just themselves with the profit they generate).The way I see it such people are leaving the country not taking to politics because the way politics is played in SL, no rules the law of the jungle they won't survive

MP Rajakaruna is talking rubbish. If the proposed amendment to constitution is to abolish President's post what is the logic of postponing the presidential election for a non existing job? The theme of opposition's claim is to blame RW for delaying election even if it is for a non-existing post. "I have to say what I have to say" policy!

Utter bullshit. This businessmen is Dammika Perera who massed his money not through clean methods of business but through Casino's. Today, this Casino money has been invested into many front line Companies of which he is now Chairman. It is best for individuals like this to continue in their business ventures rather than govern the country. This country never had leaders with good humble honest values, this is why we are today in this situation. We cannot have characters like Dammika Perera because they have a very questionable back ground similar to Mahinda Rajapakse and his brothers.

SJB MP Rajakaruna's statement that "leading businessmen who enter politics are forced to pay taxes" probably means, conversely, that there are obviously businessmen who do not pay taxes!!! I'm now used to a lot of the grotesque in Sri Lanka, but the "exemption" from paying any taxes for any social group can only be a bad, malicious political joke in a country that is still economically on the brink which none of the suffering people can laugh at!!! Furthermore, it must be asked according to which criteria of character and specific suitability representatives of the people in SL are elected to parliament and, as representatives, adequately represent the national interests and the demands of the voters!!! Business people do not represent the majority of the people, but primarily represent their commercial and economic interests determined by capital!!!
