One of the world's largest shipping companies 'Far Shipping' has agreed to provide employment opportunities for Sri Lankan trained seafarers, Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said.

He said this yesterday when a delegation from 'Far Shipping', including its Managing Director Yu Yong Jun, met the Minister at his office.

U Yong Jun said many Sri Lankan trained young sailors can be given job opportunities in his company located in China.

Therefore, he said there will be long discussions with the stakeholders involved in the naval sector of Sri Lanka regarding the recruitment methods.

Jun further said his company is willing to hire young people who have graduated from naval training institutes in Sri Lanka for on-the-job training and then hire them for permanent service.

Minister Silva said the Mahpola Maritime Company under the Sri Lanka Ports Authority as well as private sector institutions and the University of Moratuwa train quality teams in the maritime fields every year and if necessary they can be given a course that includes proficiency in the Chinese language.

Recalling that China has helped Sri Lanka as a friend since the past, the Minister expressed his gratitude as the Minister in charge of the Government of Sri Lanka for providing employment opportunities to the youth of this country in naval and various other fields. (Chaturanga Samarawickrema)

Funny this, I think upto 30% of Chinese graduates can’t find employment and Chinese youth employment is at an all time high. They are probably looking for semi slave labour to be exploited

Why offer jobs to our young men, what about the young men in their own country who are jobless and living below the poverty line?? I guess there is more than meets the eye of our politicians who are most often than not living in a world of their own called KOOKOO LAND.

Sri Lankan seafarers working on Chinese ships. Why is it that our Deshabanu industrialists and Sr Lankan rich bastards cannot set up global shipping companies?. China has no oil but imports. SL begs for oil from everybody including China. I this case China is going to use SL labour when they have enough qualified seafarers. Yes China is the world's factory but any shipping company can ship goods if tgey provide the service at reasonable costs. Look for deeper reasons for this offer to hire SL seafarers.

Hope Chinese Ambassador won’t see the President to make a complaint about the Minister. Bravo

I was reading somewhere that China did a $300 USD project in Fiji. They brought down every item they needed from China. Not even a spade was purchased locally. Even brought down girls from China to provide comfort for the workers to the disappointment of local damsels engaged in the same profession. Now this country and company is going to provide work opportunities for us ?
