Colombo, Feb. 25 (Daily Mirror) - A special program to grant legal land ownership to families who have lived for many years without proper rights was held yesterday (24) at the Anamaduwa Divisional Secretariat. The event was presided over by State Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Prof. Chandana Abayarathna.
Addressing the gathering, the Minister said that many residents in Anamaduwa, Nawagattegama, Karuwalagaswewa, Mahakumbukkadawala and Wanathavilluwa have lived under severe mental stress without legal ownership of the lands they occupy. He stressed that providing legal land rights to people born and raised in these areas is a key responsibility of the government.
The Minister said the program is being carried out with full transparency and without political influence. He noted that in the past, land was often distributed based on political or personal connections, but the present government ensures that land is granted only on merit and eligibility. He emphasized that neither politicians nor officials expect any personal benefit from the process, and that the main goal is to meet a basic need of the people.
Under the “Rich Country, A Beautiful Life” policy of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the government aims to ensure a dignified life for all citizens. The Minister said that land ownership and housing are essential for a secure and stable life. He also noted that the national housing assistance program, “Your Own Place, A Beautiful Life,” has already been launched to support landless families.
He urged beneficiaries not to sell the lands granted to them, but to live there with their families and use the land productively, especially for cultivation.
The Minister further said that the government is also focusing on improving infrastructure in these areas. Issues related to water supply, electricity and roads will be identified and addressed in the near future, he assured.
The event was attended by local representatives, the Anamaduwa Divisional Secretary, government officials and a large number of residents.
