Kurundi vihara reconstruction suspended

The Mullaithivu magistrate court has ordered the removal of new constructions at the historic Kurundi Vihara Cheithiya. Chief Incumbent of the temple Ven. Galgamuwe Santhabodhi Thera said Magistrate R.Sarwanarajah made this order on Thursday (14) when the case came up for hearing.

He said enshrining the sacred relics in the Cheithiya after completing the conservation project implemented by the Department of Archeology and the Buddist Affairs Ministry with the help of the security forces, was scheduled to take place on June 12 but it was suspended due to the protests of Tamil politicians.

Ven. Thera said the case against the Kurundi Vihara was taken up through a motion filed by the protestors and that the magistrate ordered the removal of all construction works and to refrain from any further construction works.

Ven. Santhabodhi Thera said the Department of Archaeology was taking steps to make representations to the Attorney General aganst the magistrate’s order. He said Kurundi Cheithiya had been built by King Khallatanaga in 103AD and renovated by King Agbo in 571AD and that it is the largest archaeological site in the North.(Romesh Madusanka and Sithum Chaturanga)

What had not been mentioned in this news is that it is an archaeological sites needs to be prohibited in their original form. Further there is a court order prohibiting any constructions on the site. These constructions were done not obeying the court order, which was given some 5 years back.

Destroying Hindu temples and finding any excuses to install a vihara won't do anything for harmony between ethnics. Any government will support it to get more votes from the majority and survive. Nature won't tolerate for long. May be this is why the great Gota and MR had to give up their positions.

Tamils should oppose tooth and nail, such blatant acts of racists monks and the archaeology department aided by the armed forces to distort the history of North and East of the island based on the discredited Mahavamsa. Tamils should bring this and other similar cultural vandalism committed in Tamil areas, to the attention of the international community, to prevent them being hoodwinked again by the government pointing to the sham unity among communities during the Aragalaya protest. @Tissa Fernando: The law of this land says that the archeological site should be preserved in the way it was found and the purpose of the archeological department is exactly that. If the new building is allowed here, then another monk will apply to demolish Thalatha Malikaea and built a new one! Is that okay?
