The Cabinet of Ministers this week approved a resolution to accept a JPY 200 million grant from the Government of Japan to promote the growth of the Sri Lankan fisheries industry.
The grant, which is equivalent to approximately Rs.435 million, will be used to provide Ceylon Fisheries Harbour Corporation with ice production machines and digital scales, the National Aquaculture Development Authority with fishing gear and the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Department with deep freezers and tractors equipped with deep freezers.
The grant is intended to strengthen the fisheries industry by expanding freezer facilities and supplying modern equipment, which will help to increase the value of fisheries production and improve the livelihoods of fishing communities in the Northern and Eastern provinces.
