Importing electric vehicles for state sector use: Manusha

The government has taken a decision to import electric vehicles for state sector use, Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara said.

While participating in an event organized by the Overland Automobile Institute for issuing licences to expatriate workers depending on their remittances, he said that no policy decision had been taken by the government to move the country to only electric vehicles, targeting the year 2023.

"The expatriate workers did not send dollars to the country because they had no trust in the government and used to send foreign remittance through illegal methods such as Undiyal," the Minister said.

"To change that practice, we have arranged a program to grant licenses to import electric vehicles for expatriate workers. When the proposal was brought to the cabinet, they gave their full consent," Nanayakkara said.

"A certain minister proposed to bring hybrid vehicles and to grant permission to import petrol vehicles," minister Nanayakkara added.

But the government had taken the decision to move the country towards the use of renewable energy sources and therefore to import electric vehicles.

Therefore, a policy decision has been made by the government to grant permission to import electric vehicles into the country. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
