Impactful fuel price revisions likely in April: Minister

Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said yesterday that he is hoping to announce a fuel price revision in April, which people can feel.

Addressing a rally in Minuwangoda, he said that the advantage of a stronger rupee will be given to the people in the next price revision.

The minister said price revisions on fuel will be implemented once a month, according to the price in the world market.

The minister said that the local government election candidates have requested to increase the fuel quota and they have requested the fuel quota of 5 liters per day, which is currently given per week for a motorcycle.

The Election Commission has also been informed that it will take about 6 months to find and bring in enough fuel to raise the quota for all 80,000 candidates.

He also mentioned that restructuring is definitely necessary to reduce the price of electricity and fuel. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

We all expect a genuine and affordable by the state steps may be taken for the benefit of suffering population of our country, not with an eye in the LG election. A young minister of your caliber should always stand for the truth which will be remembered by the people, without toeing petty party politics.

The call for LG election to be held early is because interested parties knew that the turn around of the economy is just around the corner and the it would be politically advantageous to have it sooner than later so that they could surf on the people's misery. The Government on the other hand would like election held later than sooner so that the benefits of the economic recovery which is in train would read the masses prior to an election to improve sentiment. As for me I am not interested in elections but want my purchasing power to improve. That said an accelerated economic recovery is what I would like to seem

If the argument were to hold, then people living in rural areas have not been affected by the fuel price increases over the past eight months also. But we see politicians of various colours screaming otherwise around the country even when speaking to rural folk. What is the truth?

Looks like Kanchana has now got a " magic wand." Besides Fuel prices, he should likewise use it and drastically reduce the Electricity Tariffs.

Now USD has dropped to.310/- , 15%. Why they can't reduce the price by at least 10% . What happens if the $ increase from 310 to.360 ? Automatically they will increase by 20% ... Will they wait till April to.increase ????

The 3 wheeler and bus fares will increase! The reason will be- although the fuel price drastically increased because of dollar decline the rupee has increased- hence the fares will be increased. (The typical type of thinking of our educated lot)

The government will not release funds until economic situation is better. And fuel price revision will be well timed months ahead of LG polls. Holding LG polls in 2023 is such a waste of money anyway.
