Health trade unions unite under GMOA banner

Colombo, Jan. 30 (Daily Mirror) - A high-level discussion was held yesterday (29) between the Executive Committee of the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) and representatives of all health sector trade unions aimed at forging a unified approach to issues affecting the public health service.

Representatives from across the health sector including doctors, dentists, nurses, paramedics and other allied health staff participated in the meeting.

The GMOA said the discussions resulted in a consensus for all health sector trade unions to function as a single collective, setting aside grade-based divisions to jointly address common concerns impacting both the health service and its workforce.

Key issues identified for collective action include the urgent need to update approved cadre numbers in the health sector, persistent shortages of medicines and medical equipment, concerns over the quality of medical supplies, the formulation of a charter to safeguard hospital staff, and proposed reforms to the primary healthcare system.
