Health Ministry issues alert as heat levels rise

Health authorities have warned of a notable increase in temperatures across Sri Lanka due to prevailing climatic conditions, including high humidity, increased water vapour, low wind speeds, and strong solar radiation.

According to Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, Anil Jasinghe, the current heat conditions are having a growing impact on public health.

He stressed that while the general population is affected, children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses are particularly vulnerable.

Authorities cautioned that prolonged exposure to high temperatures could result in dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.

The public has been advised to limit outdoor activities between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., when heat intensity is at its peak. Those who must be outdoors are urged to wear protective clothing, including hats and sunglasses, and to stay well hydrated.

Parents and caregivers have been urged to keep children and elderly individuals in cool environments and to never leave children unattended in parked vehicles.
