Greater proportion of beggars in SL urban areas are women: A census reveals

Colombo, Dec.6 (Daily Mirror) - A recent census has revealed that a greater proportion of beggars in urban areas in Sri Lanka are women, Chairman of Ways and Means Committee Patali Champika Ranawaka revealed.

Speaking during a briefing, Minister Ranawaka said the total number of beggars in municipal and urban areas is 3,661 out of which 55 percent are women.

“The Ways and Means Committee will introduce a national policy on beggars next year,” the MP said.

Also, the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee said the committee headed by him had proposed that the Aswesuma social welfare scheme be extended to all who use less than 30 units of electricity.

Make any sort of begging illegal. If they have no place to go, establish communal accommodation and cooking facilities supervised by the department of social services. Well wishers and donors too can get involved in eradication of begging in our Buddha land.

It’s a delicate balance between men and women. Men are begging at a corporate level from other countries so women need to reflect what our men are doing.

Well it is commonly believed that many of the beggers on the streets are the pawns in the mega business operated by the beggar mafia mudalali's. The actual beggers get but a fraction of the monies collected.

Road side begging in urban / semi urban areas is a deep rooted socio economic issue which some undesirable anti social elements are exploiting helpless men and women to their own advantage. Encouraged to learn that a Parliamentary Committee headed by a dynamic and visionary national leadership has come forward to find a durable solution unlike in the past.

Majority men and women beggars are have no issues with health they have legs arms eye's etc..but don't want to work they prefer the easy going some even walks 20 to 30 km begging in hot sun walking up and down sadly this fellows teaching even the own kids to beg.....
