Govt to facilitate electric vehicle imports by migrant workers to attract remittances

The government has given approval for two proposals made by Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara to promote migrant worker remittance.

Accordingly, the provision of an additional duty concession allowance for migrant workers based on the remittances transmitted through official channels upon their arrival was approved by the Cabinet Ministers.

Further, a licence to import an electric vehicle equivalent to 50% of the remittance transmitted through legal channels was also received a nod.

It is said that increasing the migrant worker remittances to Sri Lanka is a solution to the foreign exchange crisis in the country. To this end, an officers' committee was appointed as per the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers on June 27 this year to study the facts and make recommendations on relief and incentives to be given to them.

The Cabinet of Ministers approved Minister Nanayakkara’s proposal presented in accordance with the recommendations of the said committee. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

govt. does not have dollars to import fuel and they are restricting the import of electric vehicles.

But stop Duty Free vehicles for Politicians and Govt Servants. Their is no necessity whatsoever for this facility to be given to this group as it is a massive loss to the Finances of Sri Lanka. Politicians can use their Ministry Vehicles while Govt. Servants can purchase vehicles according to their needs at current duty paid prices.

Instead allow those who living abroad to send electric bicycles,bikes and vehicles. Also solar panels and systems. Charge a small fixed fee depending on category. This way foreign currency available locally can be saved. Otherwise foreign currency will be wasted again. Also try to automate most of the government work to reduce government expenses.

Again double standards - why not stop duty free vehicles for government servants, and the MPs . These people do not directly contribute to foreign exchange revenues of the country . No wonder the country cannot progress.

Going back to 1970's, where the Government allowed 2% to transffered from foreign Exchange earned to account called CRA, which can be used to import vehicles.
