Govt launches programme to assess fuel needs in food transport sector

Colombo, March 20 (Daily Mirror) - A special data collection programme has been launched by the government to identify the fuel requirements of transport service providers engaged in the wholesale food distribution sector, amid challenges stemming from the ongoing global war situation.

The initiative aims to streamline planning within the sector by gathering accurate data on fuel demand, thereby improving the efficiency of food distribution across the country. Authorities say the move will also support more informed policy decisions related to fuel allocation and management.

The programme specifically targets transport service providers who have not yet been registered with any ministry or official government database related to transport or logistics. Those already registered have been advised to submit their information through the relevant official channels.

Key objectives of the programme include assessing the current fuel demand across the sector, identifying operational challenges faced by transport providers, and supporting the formulation of data-driven recommendations.

Officials said that participation in the data collection process is voluntary. The information gathered will be analysed and submitted as recommendations to the Ministry of Power and Energy and the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) to support future fuel distribution planning.
